Two Years After Being Shot, Rola el-Halabi to Return to the Boxing Ring

Courtesy Sydney Morning Herald

Former boxing champ Rola El-Halabi isn’t going to let getting shot foil her dreams of being the dominate boxer she wants to continue to be.

It was April 2011 when El-Halabi’s step-father and former manger Hicham El-Halabi shot Rola in the right hand, left knee, and both feet before her IBA/IBF title defense versus  Irma Adler in Berlin, Germany. Hicham was sentanced to 6 years in prison last year for the incident. Rola was in wheelchair for three months, but went through a vigorous rehab to get back into the arena she loves.

Since she was inactive due to her injures, the IBF and IBA titles she held were vacated; but she will get her chance to regain the IBA title when she climbs into the ring to take on Italy’s Lucia Morelli in Ulm, Germany January 13.

El-Halabi is 11-0 as a pro, with six finishes to her credit; including a notable TKO win over Mia St. John.

“It’s like a second birth. I didn’t want to say goodbye to this great sport,” El-Halabi told Sapa-AFP. “This is like Christmas, a birthday and Easter all rolled into one.”

Commission Overturns Decision On-site for Katia Alvarino and Roxana Beatriz Laborde

Katia Alvariño

Laborde

In what was a weird situation in Uraguay,  as the Uruguayan Boxing Federation overturned a decision in a boxing bout between Katia Alvarino and Roxana Beatriz Laborde.

The judges originally scored an unanimous decision for Alvarino, but the commission promptly on the spot declared it a no contest for the Argentine fighter; feeling that “it was an unfair result for Laborde”.

.

Although no video is up on this fight yet, it would be interesting to see. Plus, would this be a good or bad thing for MMA?

This opens the door to a lot of questions.

West-Ruiz will be a 10-round bout for the vacant International Female Boxing Association (IFBA) Super Bantamweight Title.

.

The contest will be featured as the main event of the boxing card entitled, “KO Cancer – Boxing For The Cure,” presented by Sugar Shane Mosley Promotions, in association with Diamond’s Love Foundation and The Susan G. Komen Foundation. The event was created to help the fight against cancer and to increase cancer awareness. West-Cruz will receive coverage from several outlets, including Verizon’s FOX International television channel, MundoFox, Ringside TV, and Fox Sports Radio. Some notable women’s boxing match-ups featured on the undercard include Holly “Lil Bear” Lawson vs. Tammie “The Tasmanian Devil” Johnson and Katarina “Guantes” De La Cruz vs. Blanca Raymundo.

Kaliesha West is happy about getting an opportunity to fight so close to her hometown.

“I am going to have a lot of friends and family come out for my fight. My last few fights have been in Mexico, so it feels great to come home. I’m excited to make history as being the first world title fight to be featured on Sugar Shane Mosley’s professional card. Women do belong in the sport, fighting on the same cards with the men.”

Juan West, Kaliesha’s father, manager, and trainer, shared his thoughts.

“This will be Kaliesha’s first main event in the United States on an all-boxing card. Kaliesha’s supporters will be able to attend the open workout at her hometown high school to see her practice, and then come to fight night on October 6th to see her perform.”

Kaliesha West discussed her progress in training camp.

“Camp has been going well. I’m training hard, working on my endurance, and hope to put on a great performance.” Coach West added, “Kaliesha is right on schedule and is training hard. I can see her drive and determination to make a statement in this fight.”

Kaliesha talked about her opponent and said…

“Christina Ruiz is an aggressive fighter that fights with passion and determination. I have the utmost respect for her because of her accomplishments in the sport of boxing and I will not take this fight lightly.”

Juan West added…

“I’ve followed Christina Ruiz for years and was really impressed by her knockout of Emily Klinefelter. We respect her punching power. Kaliesha has speed and Ruiz has power, and typically, speed vs. power battles are exciting for the fans. Kaliesha will have to box impressively on the inside, put together her combinations, and show professional poise. On October 6, she who wants it most will take home the IFBA Title belt.”

Following the success of the women boxers in the 2012 Olympic games, Kaliesha West wants to carry on the legacy of great female fighters. She said…

“Marlen Esparza, Claressa Shields, and Katy Taylor epitomized what women’s boxing is all about. The women’s boxing events in London sold out and were extremely exciting to watch. Claressa was able to dominate, even though she had to move up in weight in order to compete. She’s a great ambassador for the sport. I admired her will power to succeed and win the gold.”

Juan West thought that the 2012 Olympics demonstrated the high skill level now found in women’s boxing.

“The skills displayed in the Olympics are the result of these women having solid amateur boxing backgrounds. In London, the women’s boxers captured the hearts of the Olympic fans and their performance hopefully opened doors for other amateurs and current pros in the sport.”

On September 20, 2012, at 3:45pm, Kaliesha West will hold an open workout at Canyon Springs High School. The workout will take place in the school gymnasium and is open to the media and general public. Canyon Springs High School is located at 23100 Cougar Canyon Drive, Moreno Valley, CA, 92557. Kaliesha West would like to thank LaDonna Jempson and the MVHCC for helping coordinate the open workout. West would also like to thank her Adidas sponsorship for their support in helping Team West adequately prepare for this fight.

Weigh-ins for Kaliesha’s fight will take place on Friday night, October 5, 2012, at 5:30pm, during the intermission of the KO Cancer Amateur Show, located at the Finish Line Sports Grill. On Kaliesha’s fight night, Saturday night, October 6, 2012, the doors will open at the Finish Line Sports Grill for boxing festivities at 2pm, with the first fight starting at 6pm. Ticket prices are $100 (VIP) and $50. Tickets for Kaliesha’s fight will be available for purchase online by visiting http://knockingoutcancer.eventbrite.com or by calling Diamond’s Love Foundation at (909) 622 9092. The Finish Line Sports Grill is located at 2201 N. White Ave., Pomona, CA, 91767.

Similarly to her father, Kaliesha West was born in South Haven, Michigan. At the age of five, she relocated with her family to Moreno Valley, California, and she began boxing five years later. In Southern California, she was a decorated amateur boxing star. She competed as a member of the USA Boxing Program, winning 98 amateur bouts, and several championships, including the 2003 National Golden Gloves. West opted to turn pro in 2006 when she received the news that women’s boxing was not going to be showcased during the 2008 Olympic games.

Kaliesha West began her pro career in 2006, when she was just eighteen years old. On September 18, 2010, at age twenty-two, she won the vacant Women’s WBO Bantamweight title on the under card of the Mosley-Mora Golden Boy Promotions PPV by defeating Angel Gladney via a seventh-round knockout. The fight took place at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, and was held during the Mexican Bicentennial Celebration. West, now twenty-four, last fought on April 14, 2012, when she defeated Claudia Lopez by unanimous decision, in Rosarito, Mexico.

Mia St. John Defeats Christy Martin; Both Call it a Career

Martin (White) & St. John (Pink) Courtesy Fight News

Two legends of the sport stepped into the ring for the final time Tuesday night at the Table Mountain Casino in California. Both will be consider the voices of the first generation of pro female boxers.

Mia St. John avenged her loss to Christy Martin in a rematch from their battle ten years ago by getting a unanimous decision.  After their historic bout, both fighters announced they were retiring.

St. John’s ends her career at 47-11-2, while Martin end it at 49-7-3.

“Me and Christy have definitely had our ups and downs and I won’t say we like each other, but we definitely respect each other,” St. John stated to BoxingScene.com. “We put up with so much crap from the media and from the critics that we relate to each other, and that bonds us.”

“We started together, we’re ending together. We’re two legends and we’re going out at the same time.”

St. John and Martin can be considered two of the fighters that make female boxing popular in it’s first golden age in the 90’s. Martin has won the WBC title light middleweight twice during her career; while St. John won her second WBC title Tuesday. Martin in particular was the first female fighter to be featured on a major boxing PPV. Both have hall of fame careers.

They helped grow the sport, and get many younger fighters involved. To see their careers end  at this moment is poetic, seeing the women’s boxing scene is getting hot once again. They paved the way for many females to get into the sport and shine on an international stage.

St. John will continue to work outside the sport to promote to sport. Martin will take a good time off from the limelight to spend time with family and friends.

They will be missed, but will always be remembered.

Tiffany Van Soest Ready for Epic WCK Event this Weekend

Courtesy Ahren Nunag Photography

Eight female kickboxers will be featured is what has become one of the biggest line-ups in the female Muay Thai history.

WCK’s “Champions of Champions” will take place a the Pala Casino and Spa in Pala, CA this Saturday, and will feature four women’s title bouts. The main event will feature the long awaited match between the UK’s Julie Kitchen and California’s own Miriam Nakamoto for the WBC & WMC kickboxing titles.

Also on the card is another world class fighter from Cali, Tiffany Van Soest. She will be fighting for the IKKC World Super Bantamweight championship.

We caught up with Van Soest to talk about the historic card, and her past year.

—–

Wombat Sports: It’s been a year since we last talked. How has it been since last summer?

Tiffany Van Soest: It’s been a wild ride! I’ve been busy training and I finally finished school. I made my pro Muay Thai debut last year, fought some formidable opponents, and have gotten some wonderful opportunities. I’m excited to see what this next year holds.

Wombat: We have been seeing more and more female Muay Thai and kickboxing fights here in the States. Do you feel this trend will continue?

Van Soest: I really hope so! MMA is great, but I think all fight fans can appreciate and enjoy a high level striking match. It’s so exciting! And to see the women coming up in the sport is great. These girls are getting better and better and making for some fierce match-ups. With more opportunities to compete and showcase those skills, the level will only continue to rise and the fights will become even more exciting.

W.S.: You have taken MMA fights before along with the kickboxing bouts. Will this continue considering the serge of support for the women’s divisions?

TVS: Absolutely! I love the different elements and variability of MMA. My main focus for the time being, is Muay Thai. I’ve set my sights on a world title, but don’t be surprised if you see me in a cage at some point!  I am a huge fan of WMMA and thanks to Shannon Knapp and Invicta FC, we (women) finally have a big stage to showcase our skills on and I couldn’t be more thrilled about it.

W.S.: What do you know about your opponent?

TVS: To be honest, I barely know her name! Haha! I had gone a little more than a month not knowing who my opponent was, because my original opponent Hillary Mack, had to pull out of the bout. I was informed a couple of days ago that I do have an opponent now and she’s been training in Thailand. I don’t care who it is, as long as there’s someone standing across the ring from me on fight night, I’m good and ready to give it everything I have and show the everyone that I’m a force to be reckoned with.

W.S.: This Muay Thai card is a blockbuster considering the talent involved. What does this mean to you to be involved?

TVS: This event is huge! It is an honor and a privilege to be on the same card along side some of Muay Thai’s best. It means so much to me to be a part of something so monumental. Muay Thai is a beautiful sport that doesn’t get the attention and recognition it deserves here in the U.S., and I feel this event will help it gain more popularity so to be a part of it is extremely meaningful to me.

W.S.: Anyone you’d like to thank?

TVS: Of course! So many Thank You’s! I’d like to thank my instructor Kru Alex Palma, my fam at Team Nogueira Gym, The coaches and everyone at Black House, my sparring partners, my Family and friends for the love, the fans for their support, My sponsors- 858 Fight Shop, Bas Rutten O2 Trainer, True Honor, Can’t Stop Crazy, and Guard Ya Grill.

I’m looking to add more sponsors to thank later (contact me)! Lol!

One more special thank you to anyone who’s ever doubted me, told me I’d never make anything of this, or I’m wasting my time-you just fuel the fire.
