Final International Spots & Team USA Coach Announced for London
The Tripartite Selection Committee has announced Thursday the rest of the invited boxers who will go to London for the Olympics.
- Stoyka Petrova of Bulgaria and Kim Hye-Song North Korea will join already selected Érica Matos of Brazil in the flyweight (51 kg) class.
- Mihaela Lăcătuş of Romania and Dong Cheng of China will join already selected Queen Underwood of the USA and Mahjoub Oubtil of Morroco in the lightweight (60 kg) weight class.
- Anna Laurell of Sweden and Marina Volnova of Kazakhstan will join Mary Spencer of Canada and Elizabeth Andiego of Kenya in the middleweight (75 kg) weight class.
All will join those who qualified through the AIBA tournament in the Olympics. Seeding is yet to be announced for the tournament.
On a related note, Team USA Boxing has announced that Basheer Abdullah will be head coach. Abdullah was the head coach during the 2004 Athen Olympics, and has advised the team off and on since the 90’s. As an Army officer, he helped integrate women into their boxing programs. He also is Queen Underwood’s coach on her way to qualifying for the Olympics.
The Women’s Olympic Boxing tournaments start August 5th. The early rounds will be streamed on NBCOlympics.com, with the semi-finals and finals expected to air on one of the NBC family of networks.
