Holm and Mathis Weighed in for Rematch
Holly Holm is hoping the second match with IBA and WBF welterweight champ Anne-Sophie Mathis turns out better than her first.
Holm and Mathis will rematch Friday night for the belt, but Holm is seeking redemption from her KO loss to Mathis in December. This was Holm’s first loss in 24 fighters, and her first loss since 2004. Mathis has only one loss in her 17 year career.
“I lost that fight, no excuses,” Holly stated to World Boxing News. “I just got beat. There’s no way around it. I had to be honest with myself to get better. It happened. Maybe it was good that it happened for me to get better at this stage of my career. ”
“I could have fought the rest of my career, never losing again, but I wanted to fight her. It was a rough fight for me and I’ve battled my demons over that night. If I didn’t believe in myself, I’ve already lost. Nobody is going in there fighting for me.”
Both made weight Thursday, with Mathis weighing in at 145.2 pounds, while Holm tipped the scales at 146 pounds. Win lose or draw, Holm stated she would not give up combat sports.
“Holm vs. Mathis – The Reckoning” will be live at the Route 66 Casino in Albuquerque, NM Friday night. The fight will not be streamed, but check out @WombatSports on twitter for up to the minute results.
