Olympic Boxing Trials Results – Day 1

Middleweight Clarissa Sheilds

Monday saw the first round of the first ever U.S. Olympic Women’s Boxing Trials in Spokane, WA.24 of the country’s best pugilists banged it out for the right to become the first to represent the U.S. at the Olympics.

The tournament is a double elimination with the winners of all brackets heading to China for the World Olympic qualifiers.

In the flyweight division, six time national amateur champion Marlen Esparza from Houston, TX  advanced due to her opponent, Cynthia Moreno, dropping out due to injury. She will face two time national team member Alex Love of Monroe, WA in the next round of the winner’s bracket.

Two-time USA Boxing National Championships silver medalist Tyrieshia Douglas of Baltimore, MD will also take on 2011 Pan American Games representative Christina Cruz of New York, N.Y. in the other winner’s bracket bout.

The lightweights took the stage next, with Five-time national champion Queen Underwood of Seattle, WA taking home a dominate victory, and will coninue on in the inner’s bracket to face  2011 National Golden Gloves champion Mikaela Mayer of Los Angeles.

The other Lightweight winner’s bracket bout will feature 2012 USA Boxing National Championships silver medalist Tiara Brown of Lehigh Acres, FL will take on  N’yteeyah Sherman of Barberton, OH.

The middleweights brought a 16 year old PAL boxing champ Claressa Shields of Flint, MI upsetting multi-time national champion Franchon Crews of Baltimore, MD to advance. She will rematch 2010 Welterweight World Champion Andrecia Wasson of Centerline, MI. They met in the PAL National Championships match last year.
